Drop shape probability contours in rain from 2-D video disdrometer: implications for the ‘self consistency method’ at C-band

چکیده
The so-called self consistency method uses the fact that the true radar co-polar reflectivity (Zh e) and the differential reflectivity (Zdr ) can be used to predict the specific differential propagation phase (Kdp) at each radar range gate. The application of this method at S-band is relatively straight-forward as has been demonstrated in the past (e.g. Goddard et al., 1994). At C-band, one needs to correct for co-polar attenuation and differential attenuation

Rain microstructure retrievals using 2-D video disdrometer and C-band polarimetric radar
Measurements using the 2-D video disdrometer (2DVD) taken during a heavy rainfall event in Huntsville, Alabama, are analysed. The 2DVD images were processed to derive the rain microstructure parameters for each individual drop, which in turn were used as input to the T-matrix method to compute the forward and back scatter amplitudes of each drop at C-band. The polarimetric radar variables were ...
متن کاملDrop Shape Studies in Rain Using 2d Video Disdrometer and Polarimetric, Dual-wavelength Radar
Rain drop shapes play an important role in algorithm development for determining rainfall rates from polarimetric radar measurements [1]. It has been shown previously that the 2D video disdrometer (2DVD) [2] is capable of providing accurate information on drop shapes. An artificial rain experiment conducted under calm wind conditions [3, 4] yielded the mean drop shapes and the shape variations ...

The shape of rain drops has been studied in various ways over the past several decades, amongst them being (i) wind-tunnel measurements by Pruppacher and Beard (1970), (ii) numerical modelling of equilibrium drop shapes by Beard and Chuang (1987) and (iii) laboratory measurements by Beard et al. (1991) as well as Andsager et al. (1999). More recently, it has been shown that with a fully calibra...
متن کاملPolarimetric Radar Estimators Based on a Constrained Gamma Drop Size Distribution Model
Raindrop size distribution (DSD) retrieval from remote radar measurements or from in situ disdrometer measurements is an important area of research. If the shape ( ) and slope ( ) of a three-parameter gamma distribution n(D) N0D exp( D ) are related to one another, as recent disdrometer measurements suggest, the gamma DSD model is simplified to a two-parameter DSD, that is, a constrained gamma ...
متن کاملComparison of Two Raindrop Size Distribution Retrieval Algorithms for X-Band Dual Polarization Observations
In this study the authors evaluate two algorithms, the so-called beta ( ) and constrained methods, proposed for retrieving the governing parameters of the “normalized” gamma drop size distribution (DSD) from dual-polarization radar measurements. The method treats the drop axis ratio as a variable and computes drop shape and DSD parameters from radar reflectivity (ZH), differential reflectivity ...
